Why Vincent Van Gogh's paintings were not sold while he
was alive?
Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is
among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. As a
young man he worked as an art dealer. His younger brother Theo supported him
financially, and the two kept up a long correspondence by letter. In just over a decade,
he created about 2,100 artworks. He was not commercially successful, though, and
his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness and poverty. Van Gogh was
unsuccessful during his lifetime, and was considered a madman and a failure. He
became famous after his suicide. The reason why he didn`t sell any paintings while
he was alive may be the fact that his aesthetics was considered by most people to be
reckless and ugly. In addition, society considered him mentally unstable and he spent
most of his time in asylums until his suicide two years later. So he died unsuccessful
and in poverty.
